Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
